A group of German experts led by Alice Salburg from the Reconstruction Credit Institute (KFW) worked this week with Le Truong Luu Deputy Chairman of the Thua Thien-Hue Provincial People’s Committee on implementing climate change project.

Salburg said the project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the KFW with a total investment capital of US$7 million. It will be carried out in Vietnam’s Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue provinces and Laos’ Salavan and Sekong provinces.

In Thua Thien-Hue, the project will consist of 4 basis components: improving the capacity of natural reserves, minimising illegal transportation of wood in the border areas between Vietnam and Laos, replanting trees in the forests, and reducing the level of carbon emission into the environment. The province will receive US$2.5 million for four years.

The province’s deputy chairman said that Thua Thien-Hue pays close attention to the management of its forests. In recent years, the province has mobilised investment resources to improve forest coverage to 65 percent. Many of the province’s natural forests are well protected.

The deputy chairman thanked the KFW and BMU for their support and pledged to finish the project with the best possible results.
