Sailor training centre handed over to Vietnam

(VOV) - Representatives from Russia and Vietnam signed a document, on November 5, to hand over a sailor training centre for the 636 Kilo class submarine in Cam Ranh Bay to the Vietnam Navy, according to the Voice of Russia.

The handover ceremony marking the first of the six submarines of project 636 to dock at Cam Ranh Bay will be held in January, 2014.

More than 40 Vietnamese naval officers studied under a programme in Russia for nearly two years to train teachers and trainers for the centre.

The contract to provide six “Varshavyanka” diesel-electric submarines to Vietnam was signed in 2009.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung visited Vietnamese naval soldiers who participated in training courses in Kaliningrad, Russia in May 2013.

Equipping Kilo class submarines aims to defend the nation and develop the Vietnam Navy in line with modern standards.
