Coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Quang Ngai are put on alert when Kai-Tak, a powerful storm, is entering the East Sea and moving toward the northern coast.

Kai-Tak pounded northern Philippines on August 15, killing at least two people and causing widespread flooding.

The storm is travelling between north and north-west at a speed of 15-20km per hour and is forecast to regain strength.

On August 17 the storm is forecast to be 90km away from Hong Kong, packing winds of up to 102km per hour near its centre and causing rough seas. After making landfall, it will weaken into a low pressure system and dissipate on the Chinese land.

In a telegram sent on August 14, the National Committee for Flood and Storm Control requested that northern coastal provinces and a number of relevant ministries be well prepared for the storm which is expected to threaten fishermen and dump heavy rains on coastal areas in the coming days.

Last month tropical storm Vicente struck Vietnam, causing flash floods in northern mountain localities and killing less than 10 people.
