Chess grandmaster Liem triumphs at SPICE Cup Open

Chess grandmaster Le Quang Liem has won the annual SPICE Cup Open, the highest rated international invitational tournament in the US, and taken home US$5,000 of cash prize.
In the final match, the Ho Chi Minh City-born player, ELo-rated 2697, faced and beat Illya Nyzhnyk of Ukraine (Elo 2628).
Liem won the SPICE Cup in 2011 and was the runner-up in 2012. At the Millionaire Chess Tournament, which wrapped up on October 13 in Las Vegas, he came in second and was awarded US$50,000.
Experts expected following the new victory Liem’s Elo rating would see a leap to reach more than 2,700.
