Meeting marks Vietnam-Ukraine diplomatic ties

(VOV) - The Vietnamese people always bear in mind Ukraine’s valuable support in their past struggle for national independence and freedom and the current national construction and development process.

The statement was made by Dang Van Chien, President of the Vietnam-Ukraine Friendship Association (VUFA), at a meeting in Hanoi on January 23 to mark the 23nd anniversary of Vietnam-Ukraine diplomatic ties (January 1) and the 20th anniversary of VUFA (January 12).

Chien said that two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Ukraine has increased sharply despite global economic crisis.

Vietnam exports agro-forestry and seafood products, garment, and footwear to Ukraine and imports steel, fertilisers, machines, equipment and chemicals.

Ukraine currently invests in four projects in Vietnam with a combined capitalisation of US$24 million, mainly in shipping, hydroelectric power, and vegetable and fruit processing.

Around 1,400 Vietnamese students are studying in Ukraine universities and schools while 25 Ukrainian students are studying in Vietnam.

Chien said since its establishment on January 12, 1995,  VUFA has made significant contribution to promoting traditional ties of friendship and solidarity between the two countries.

On this occasion, Ukraine ambassador to Vietnam Oleksiy Shovkoplias expressed his delight at the fine development of bilateral traditional ties and hoped that VUFA will organise more exchange activities to strengthen mutual understanding between the two peoples.
