Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) have agreed to promote judicial cooperation in the hope of signing a civil legal assistance agreement commensurate with growing bilateral cooperative relations.

Chief Judge of the Vietnam Supreme People’s Court Truong Hoa Binh and his RoK counterpart, Lee Yong-hoon, reached a consensus on the issue during the former’s recent visit to the RoK.

Both chief judges realised that various legal matters are arising from the growing number of marriages between Vietnamese and RoK citizens and the rapid development of bilateral economic and trade relations.

Mr Binh spoke highly of smooth cooperation between the two supreme courts over the past years, particularly in personnel training. Since 2005, the RoK Supreme Court has granted scholarships to Vietnamese students to pursue postgraduate training in the country, he noted.

The Vietnam supreme people’s court sent staff members to study the RoK’s court, law and justice system as well as its international experiences.

The RoK court also proposed the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) provide the Vietnamese side with US$3 million to establish a judge training centre. Scheduled for operation in late 2010, the centre will help train around 5,000 judges each year, thereby creating changes in Vietnam’s judicial sector.
