Fresh impetus for Vietnam-Cambodia cooperation

(VOV)- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen committed to further boosting all-round cooperation, especially in economics, trade and investment.

At his talks with PM Nguyen Tan Dung on Phnom Penh on January 13, PM Hun Sen highlighted Dung’s visit as fresh impetus to elevate the Vietnam-Cambodia traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation to a higher level.

PM Dung congratulated the Cambodian Government on its tremendous achievements since the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime was overthrown 35 years ago.

He voiced his confidence in a more prosperous Cambodia with a higher regional and international stature.

The two delegations hold talks in Phnom Penh.

The Vietnamese Government leader also praised Cambodia for helping a delegation led by National Assembly (NA) Chairman Heng Samrin to Vietnam to attend the ceremony to mark the 35th anniversary of the victory in the southwest border defence war and the joint victory of Vietnam and Cambodia over the genocidal regime (January 7).

He described the delegation’s involvement in the ceremony as a contribution to strengthening the friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance between the two peoples, confirming the just cause by the Cambodian and Vietnamese soldiers and people to overthrow Khmer Rouge, the most brutal genocidal regime in the history of mankind and win a victory on January 7, 1979.

The two PMs pledged further support for Vietnamese businesses, enabling them to run long-term investment in the country while expressing strong will to lift two-way trade to US$5 million by 2015.

The two Government leaders agreed to take drastic measures for economic connectivity in areas of mutual strength such as sea, air and road transport, tourism, telecommunication, finance, banking, food production, rubber plantation.

They consented to make the revised protocol on the investment encouragement and protection agreement become effective soon and negotiate the double tax avoidance agreement aiming to facilitate businesses’ investment.

Later in the day, PM Hun Sen hosted a banquet in honour of PM Dung and his encourage.

As scheduled, the two PMs are expected to attend a ground-breaking ceremony of Long Binh-Chray Thom bridge construction project on January 14.
