Tobacco kills 7 million people every year

The World Health Organization has revealed that tobacco kills more than seven million people each year, and 80% of them live in low-and middle-income countries.

In Vietnam, the number of diseases related to cigarette smoke has increased significantly. Experts have said cigarettes are helping cancers to grow.

According to experts, 96.8% of lung cancers patients in Vietnam smoke.

In a recent seminar on throat and lung cancer screening, experts said that the risk of developing lung cancer for smokers is 10 times higher compared to non-smokers.

Second-hand smoke also increases the risk of lung cancer by up to 30%.

The World Health Organization has selected the theme “Tobacco – a threat to development” for this year’s World No Tobacco Day. The initiative is expected to propose measures that governments and the public should take to promote health and development by confronting the tobacco crisis.

The World Health Organisation has called upon countries to give priority to promoting the dissemination of activities of damages of cigarette use, while realising sustainable development goals by 2030.
