Hanoi hosts conference on Southeast Asian water environment

The 12th International Symposium on Southeast Asian Water Environment (SEAWE) opened in Hanoi on November 29 helped regional researchers, managers and experts share experience in water environment management.

This year’s symposium was co-organised by Vietnam’s National University of Civil Engineering (NUCE), the Vietnam Environment Administration, the Institute for Global Environment Strategies, University of Tokyo and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan.

The symposium was initiated in 2003 by Japan’s University of Tokyo.

Main topics discussed during the conference were water management and water treatment technology.

Participants exchanged views on coastal and marine water environment, urban flooding and its health consequences and groundwater pollution control.

They also discussed climate change and water environment management, water supply and treatment, emerging contaminants and environmental technology and appropriate technology for water and sanitation.

According to NUCE’s Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Viet Nga, water treatment technology in Vietnam should include technical quality while meeting economic requirements and weather conditions as well as processed objects.

She also noted despite a few researches on water environment conducted in Vietnam, the number of Vietnamese scientists participating in the event is on the rise, proving that they have kept up with regional research quality.

The event runs through November 30
