The comment made by a US Embassy spokesperson on the temporary detention of several persons on August 21 in Hanoi is wrong and unsuitable.

Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga made the statement while answering reporters’ questions at a regular press briefing on August 25.

“In Vietnam, citizens’ basic rights to freedom are clearly stipulated in the Constitution and the regulations of the law, and are ensured in reality,” she said.

Like all other law-governed states in the world, the implementation of rights to freedom and democracy must abide by the regulations of the law, Nga said, adding that this is clearly prescribed in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Nga said that Vietnam’s authorised agencies have dealt with those who defied the law and disturbed public order.

“Their law enforcement is to ensure social order and safety,” she said.

Regarding Vietnam’s response to the current situation in Libya, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said that Vietnam is keeping a close watch on the Libyan situation.

“We respect every decision made by the Libyan people and wish the situation would return to normal as soon as possible for the benefit of national development,” she noted.
