More than 26,200 cases of petechial fever, including 30 deaths, were reported nationwide in the first six months of this year, up 40 percent against 2011, according to the Preventive Medicine Department.

In June alone, 8,000 new cases were confirmed, 90 percent of which are concentrated in the southern regions.

The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has recorded the highest number of infections, followed by Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Dak Nong provinces.

However, infections in Ho Chi Minh City and Ca Mau province are down 20-50 percent compared to the same period last year.

In contrast to the widely spreading epidemic in the central and southern regions, the number of cases recorded in the northern region has fallen by 40 percent against 2011.

July to September is considered the peak time for outbreaks of the disease, and localities are advised to take urgent measures to stamp it out.
