Opportunities available to move overseas

Mr. Daniel Lim, Chairman of immigration specialists AIMS, tells about the possibilities for Vietnamese thinking about heading overseas.

What countries are favored by Vietnamese to go to work in or to emigrate to?

Vietnamese prefer to emigrate to Western countries that have better education systems, better healthcare, higher salaries, cleaner environments and, most importantly, better quality of living.

The most popular destinations at the moment are Australia, Canada, the US and the EU.

These countries are also popular for immigrants from other countries, due their high standard of living, superior education and healthcare systems, and other social benefits available to citizens and permanent residents.

Each has its own unique characteristics and are suitable for certain types of immigrants. For example, many Vietnamese families choose the US and Australia because relatives and friends have already settled in those countries, while the younger generation prefers Canada, since it’s a peaceful country with free healthcare and education.

Canada is also known for its skilled worker immigration program, where anyone with a college degree and English proficiency can be granted permanent residency for the whole family.

Other richer families prefer EU countries, which have investment programs that grant permanent residency or citizenship for three generations, with investment as low as $316,221 securing permanent residency and $2.1 million securing citizenship.

Most importantly, immigration programs offered by EU countries are usually the fastest and the most secure form of investment.

Applicants can obtain permanent residency as quickly as three months and citizenship as quickly as six months when investing in real estate or government bonds.

What is your view of the quality of Vietnamese employees when they go to work overseas?

Vietnamese in general are very hard working, smart, and creative.

Vietnamese heading overseas have shown they can easily assimilate into any country, society and environment.

However, the greatest obstacle facing Vietnamese working in countries such as Australia, the US, Canada and the EU is language proficiency.

Most Vietnamese do not use English as their first language.

Those working overseas also sometimes lack discipline and teamwork and planning skills, due to the nature of the education system in Vietnam.

But as Vietnamese are considered fast learners, I believe most people would have no problem joining the global workforce.

What are the advantages for and difficulties facing Vietnamese working overseas?

By emigrating to countries with a higher standard of living, Vietnamese can enjoy the boundless benefits these countries offer, including better healthcare, better education, better incomes, better natural environment, better air quality, and better public transport, among others.

On the other hand, the most common problems facing Vietnamese when emigrating overseas are language proficiency and cultural adaptation, since they must use a non-native language for everyday communication and must adapt to a new culture that involves so many things that are hard to accept or even understand.

What advantages and disadvantages does AIMS have in operating in Vietnam? What are the company’s upcoming plans in the country?

AIMS entered Vietnam at a very early stage, when people were not fully aware of how easy they can obtain permanent residency or even a passport in first-world countries for their entire family at a very reasonable cost and without having to move there immediately.

This has been both a challenge and an advantage for us. The challenge is we must invest a lot of time and effort in educating people about the meaning of obtaining permanent residency without worrying about finding job or moving there, and the truth is that obtaining permanent residency is not really expensive compared with the benefits on offer.

We are delightfully surprised by the fact that 80 per cent of people feel very excited about our program when they meet our immigration consultants.

In the near future, our strategy is to market our emigration programs and permanent residency opportunities in Western countries like the US and Australia.
