Economists, scholars and representatives of countries and international organizations have praised Vietnam as a model of economic development for the region at an annual conference on development cooperation between Switzerland and the Mekong River region.

The event, attended by over 1,700 participants, was held in Fribourg, Switzerland, on August 22 by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

The scholars added that Vietnam has pursued a policy of radical economic regeneration during the renewal (Doi Moi) process over the past 12 years. The country joined the World Trade Organization early last year, which has served as a key to its integration into the global economy, they said.

The participants also discussed challenges and successes in cooperation between Switzerland and countries in the Mekong River region through projects being carried out in Laos and Vietnam.
