The Governmental Committee for Religious Affairs on June 15 reviewed the implementation of the State policy on freedom of religion and belief for the Hao Hao Buddhist Sect and Islam.

Representatives of religion boards from 25 southern provinces attended the conference held in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang.

Over the past years, the Party and State have issued and implemented plans and policies on freedom of religion and belief, creating a legal corridor to facilitate Hoa Hao followers' activities in line with the law.

The Hoa Hao Buddhist Sect Central Executive Board has organised training courses on the faith regularly, and many Hoa Hao followers have actively participated in socio-economic development programmes and charitable activities. To date, the sect boasts nearly two million followers.

Like Hoa Hao Buddhist Sect, Islam has developed in 10 cities and provinces, mostly in the south in Vietnam. The religion at present has 60,000 followers, including 30,000 of the Bani Islam Sect. It has established two representative boards in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta province of An Giang, and built 27 mosques and sub-mosques and 14 places of worship for followers.

Local authorities of provinces of Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan, Tay Ninh, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Long An, Tra Vinh and An Giang have granted Islamic followers soft loans to help them develop household-based economies in order to develop their financial security.
