Vietnam seeks IADL support for East Sea stand-off settlement

(VOV) - Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has thanked the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) and its honorary president Jitendra Sharma for backing Vietnam in opposing China’s illegal oil rig placement in Vietnam’s territorial waters.

Receiving Sharma in Hanoi on June 11, Phuc said the IADL’s support has significantly helped international friends better understand Vietnam’s peace-loving spirit and its firm legal foundations in the struggle for justice.

He expressed hope that the IADL will continue supporting Vietnam in its coming steps in line with international law to defend national sovereignty, as well as in the struggle for peace and justice in the region and the world at large.

Vietnam provides substantial assistance for the Vietnam Layers’ Association to accomplish its mission to the IADL, he assured his guest.

Sharma said the IADL has released a statement expressing its concern about the escalated tension in the East Sea, and asking China to respect international law, stop, and restrain itself from acts that may further complicate the situation and increase tensions in the region, threatening security and maritime safety in the East Sea.

The Vietnam Lawyers’ Association is part of the IADL, and the IADL supports Vietnam’s steps towards settling the East Sea dispute in accordance with international law, he said.
