Trade ties between Vietnam and the US have grown and flourished since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1995 and implemented the 2001 bilateral trade agreement, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).

The MoIT says that two-way trade last year reached US$13 billion, of which US$10.5 billion was generated from Vietnamese exports to the US, a year-on-year increase of 28.9 percent. As a result, the US became Vietnam’s largest trade partner and largest export market.

Vietnamese businesses export 18 main products to the US, with textile and garments, wood products and footwear raking in US$6.6 billion and representing 63.4 percent of the country’s exports to the US.

The MoIT says that Vietnam, which now the third largest footwear exporter to the US after Italy and China, has a great chance to ship the product to this lucrative market, particularly when US domestic producers are only able to meet just 2 percent of the market’s demand.
