Over 6,000 children under six years old in rural Vietnam are beginning to benefit from a personal hygiene education programme that began early this month, the Department of Early Education under the Ministry of Education and Training has announced.

This is the second year of the five-year collaborative project between the Department of Early Education and Unilever Fund Vietnam, with a total budget of VND10 billion contributed by Unilever.

This year’s programme was implemented in the five northern mountainous provinces of Ha Giang, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Lao Cai and Cao Bang.

Le Minh Ha, Director of the department, said the programme would help raise awareness among the parents and teachers at 35 kindergartens in these provinces about personal hygiene and care for children.

These kindergartens would receive assistance in improving the hygiene of facilities and organising festivals for children and would be provided with free soap and washcloths.

Last year, the programme was implemented in the five Mekong Delta provinces of Can Tho, Hau Giang, Vinh Long, Kien Giang and Tra Vinh. A total of 8,859 children, parents and teachers at 35 kindergartens participated in the programme’s activities.
