The 8th conference on fighting AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in the East Asian-Pacific region opened in Hanoi on September 27.

Over 200 delegates from Vietnam’s Ministry of Health; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and international organizations attended the event, along with representatives of countries and organizations that receive assistance from the Global Fund.

The conference aims to find solutions to issues related to the financial management of projects sponsored by the Global Fund to reduce costs, establish suitable approaches and encourage national self-control.

Since 2002, the Global Fund has given more than US$400 million to Vietnam to fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. In addition to finances, Vietnam has also been supported with technology and management.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Xuyen emphasized that Vietnam has committed to follow the regulations set by the Global Fund and use the assistance effectively.

Positive project results have contributed significantly to the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Vietnam, she noted.

In addition to plenary sessions and proposals for the Global Fund strategy in the 2011-2016 period, delegates will take part in a variety of seminars and visit places deploying HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis services in Vietnam.
