Most of the approximately 500,000 Vietnamese people working in more than 30 countries and territories around the world send about 70-80 percent of their earnings home.

Since early this year, overseas Vietnamese remittances have reached more than US$6 billion, equal to the total volume in 2007. The sum will increase considerably more, especially near the traditional Lunar New Year festival (Tet).

The sharp increase in remittances is thanks to the State’s open policy on foreign exchange management and preferential policies for overseas Vietnamese, including encouraging them to invest and buy houses in the homeland.

Over the past five years, in addition to overseas Vietnamese in the US, Australia, and the Europe, Vietnamese guest workers, experts and students who work and study abroad have also sent large sums of money to their families back home.
