HCM City fire burns down over 300 motorbikes

(VOV) - A roaring fire gutted a private parking lot in front of a hospital in HCM City on April 5, burning down more than 300 motorbikes in it.

The incident occurred at 01.30 pm and security guards called in fire fighters after failing to put out the blaze using mini extinguishers.

Fourteen fire engines were mobilised from Districts 1 and 8 to the scene and it took fire fighters an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Preliminary reports show 335 motorbikes and a car burnt to shell and total damage was estimated at VND2 billion.

Local police said the parking lot covering more than 1,000 square metres is capable of keeping nearly 1,000 motorbikes and cars.

Luckily fire fighters came in time, preventing the fire spreading to the remaining 400sq.m of the parking lot where more than 200 other motorbikes were being kept.

Most of the motorbikes are from pawn shops nearby.

Initial investigations show the fire came out from a rubbish dumping site near the parking lot.
