President launches tree planting festival

(VOV) - State President Truong Tan Sang has called on Vietnamese people to plant trees, protect forests and prevent illegal exploitation of forest products to keep the environment clean and green.

Sang issued the call at a tree planting festival in Bac Giang province on February 18, recalling late President Ho Chi Minh’s appeal for the movement in 1959.

“The tree planting festival has since become a fine tradition of the Vietnamese nation when spring comes.

“As climate change is threatening our lives, protecting the environment for sustainable economic development is vital to every nation and tree planting is becoming ever more significant,” said Sang.

He underlined the need to plant trees, saying the activity will contribute to developing the local economy, reducing poverty, increasing incomes, and creating a healthy environment for all.

He planted a tree at Ho Chuoi station relic in Phon Xuong commune, Yen The district, and paid floral tribute to hero Hoang Hoa Tham who led the Yen The revolt against the French colonialists in the late 19th century.

At a working session with provincial leaders, the State President expressed his hope Bac Giang will set a national example in developing new rural areas and protecting forests so as to improve local people’s living conditions.
