The Veterinary Department has said that a fresh bird flu outbreak has occurred in central Nghe An province.

According to its branch in Vinh city, some 160 unvaccinated ducks were found dead in the Dien Tho commune, Dien Chau district, on May 1. Tests taken on the ducks, were returned positive for the H5N1 virus.

By May 4, 246 out of the 610 birds in the flock were found dead and the remainder were culled as a precaution.

Local veterinary workers then disinfected and sterilised the area and set up quarantine stations to halt the transport of poultry from the region.

The Veterinary Department said 60 provinces and cities nationwide have vaccinated more than 103 million fowls up to now.
