The Cau and Nhue-Day rivers in northern Vietnam and the Dong Nai River in southern Vietnam are seriously polluted, according to a report released by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, on April 12.

The report was the first of its kind released by a Ministry that has become increasingly alarmed by the levels of pollution affecting the country's water- ways.

Identifying industrial and medical sewage from urban areas and craft villages as prime factors in contributing to degradation in the rivers, the report underlined measures to protect the water environment in general and the environment of the three rivers in particular.

The study called for building a substantial legal protection framework, applying new technologies and strengthening international environmental cooperation as important methods for improving the conditions of the rivers.

The report was drawn up with technical and financial assistance from the Danish International Development Agency and the World Bank.
