A suicide bomber killed at least eight policemen and injured several others in north-western Pakistan's Swat Valley, said police and media report on August 23.

The bomber drove a vehicle laden with explosives at a check-point in an attack claimed by an Islamic militant group, Tehrik-e-Taleban Pakistan.

The blast severely damaged adjacent shops and houses in Swat.

The same group claimed an attack on a Pakistani munitions factory this week which killed at least 63 people.

Militant violence is a major challenge for Pakistan's new leaders who will be chosen in an election to be held on September 6.

The ruling coalition is struggling to nominate a candidate for president to replace Pervez Musharraf, who resigned on August 18 after nearly a decade in power.
