Chinese rescue ships on Saturday night found three more Vietnamese sinking vessels and the body of a dead fisherman drifting towards the coast of the Chinese province of Guangxi.

Among the three found vessels, one is coded DNA 90079 from Da Nang with 24 fishermen on board, including two from Da Nang and 22 others from Quang Nam. The other two vessels were not identified.
The Navy Command from Zone 3 dispatched two ships HQ629 and HQ631 to retrieve the vessels and the deceased from the Chinese request.

By the end of Saturday (May 27), a total of 273 fishermen from Da Nang, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai had been reportedly dead or missing.

Dr Pham Hung Chien, director of Da Nang General Hospital, said that the hospital had to bury bodies of the three unidentified victims after taking ADN samples and other necessary tests for later identification by their relatives.

Rescue work continues

Rescue work for Vietnamese fishermen missing in the recent Typhoon Chanchu has been stepped up over the past three days, according to the Navy Command. The two navy ships coded HQ629 and HQ631 discovered the wreckage of Vietnamese vessels, most of them had disintegrated or sunk. However, no survivors or dead bodies had been found.

The two navy ships have so far combed a 500-km area near the Taiwanese islands of Dongsha for the victims and are expected to move further around the affected area.

Le Huy Ngo, head of the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control, said that hopes are fading away despite intensified rescue efforts in the Taiwanese waters over the past three days. In addition to navy rescue ships from Zone 3, Chinese ships and helicopters have been deployed to search for victims around the Dong-sha islands where 27 Vietnamese fishing vessels sought shelter from the typhoon. Mr Ngo said rescue work will continue in the next 10 days.

On May 27, many humanitarian organisations visited and presented gifts to the victims’ families in Thanh Khe district, Da Nang city. A humanitarian organisation from Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem district handed over VND165 million to the bereaved families in Thanh Khe district.

Earlier, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group transferred VND200 million to Da Nang, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai to make up for losses suffered by the victims’ families.
