International Trachoma Initiative (ITI) has decided to provide more than US$237,000 and 130,000 doses of antibiotic for Vietnam's project to eliminate trachoma, the main cause of blindness, by 2010.

How to implement the project in 2006 was the main topic of discussion at a conference held in Hanoi on June 23.

This year, the project aims to reduce the rate of trachoma sufferers by 5 percent in 264 communes, raise people's awareness of personal hygiene, safe water and environmental protection, and increase the number of people who can access safe water in the beneficiary areas.

The project will distribute information on trachoma and prevention techniques of the disease and encourage people to get medical check-ups in order to properly diagnosis and treat the disease.
