Safe helmets given to pupils in Hai Duong

An event to promote traffic safety was organised in northern Hai Duong province on September 13, equipping more than 10,370 children with new helmets.

Twenty scholarships, each worth VND2 million (US$89.7), were also presented to local pupils with disadvantaged backgrounds.

The event featured art performances, a helmet photo exhibition and a fashion show. Additionally, the results from a number of competitions were revealed, such as drawing your dream on a helmet, which has taken place in six primary schools since August.

According to Ono Masaru, Chairman of Yamaha Motor Vietnam – a major sponsor, Hai Duong is one of two destinations receiving 20,000 helmets from the company this year, valued over VND3 billion (US$134,529), as part of a programme aiming to raise communal commitments to helmet-wearing among children.

Nguyen Manh Hien, Chairman of the Hai Duong People’s Committee, said the province is working to form helmet habits among primary level students.

The national committee for road safety announced that an average of 2,000 children die every year from traffic accidents, making it one of the top five leading causes of death among children over five years old.
