US Ambassador champions TPP trade pact

(VOV) - As Vietnam and the US look toward the 20th anniversary of normalized relations, we have a unique opportunity to deepen our comprehensive partnership in ways that will make it last.

Newly appointed US Ambassador Theodore G. Osius made the affirmation on December 29 in HCM city at a reception hosted by Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Secretary Le Thanh Hai.

A successful Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement would create jobs and economic growth in both countries he said adding, that Vietnam and the US should continue strengthening security ties, with a special emphasis in the maritime and transport realms.

Ambassador Osius reiterated the US commitment to send more students back and forth, for US scientists to work more closely with their Vietnamese counterparts and for increased cooperation in healthcare.

The Ambassador expressed confidence the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement would trigger a new wave of US investment in the Southeast Asian nation. He also spoke highly of the Overseas Vietnamese (OVS) community in the US, referring to them as an extraordinary national treasure of Vietnam.

For his part, Secretary of HCM city Party Committee Le Thanh Hai said that the Vietnam-US relationship has been steadily increasing and developing into a close relationship in the spirit of mutual respect and trust.

He also talked about his vision for fortified cooperation with the US in the fields of economics, trade, education and health care.
