India boost security cooperation with Vietnam

(VOV) - India attaches great importance to relations with Vietnam in its Look East policy, National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon has said.

Security and national defence cooperation is one of the key pillars in the strategic partnership between the two countries, Menon told Vietnamese Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang in New Delhi on October 31.

He said finalizing legal documents on bilateral cooperation in crime fight and security will lift security ties between India and Vietnam to a new level.

He expressed hope both sides expand cooperation in other areas, including internet security, information security, and aerospace, as well as establishing links between the National Security Council of India and the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam.

For his part, Minister Quang said Vietnam desires to further strengthen traditional friendship and strategic partnership with India.

He spoke highly of India’s revised Look East policy, considering ASEAN an important pillar and supporting its central role in addressing regional issues.

He acknowledged India’s active and effective contribution to ASEAN’s efforts to build a strong, united community, narrow the development gap, and increase regional connectivity.

In its Look East policy, India supports ASEAN’s East Sea stance, promoting the realization of the bloc’s six-point principles on the East Sea, full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) in the East Sea, and early signing of the Code of Conduct (COC) in the region.

Vietnam appreciates India’s US$24.8 million ODA package for upgrading the Dien Bien-Tay Trang road, part of a new expressway linking India-Myanmar-Laos-Vietnam and Cambodia, Quang said.

He said the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam has worked closely with relevant Indian agencies to strengthen bilateral cooperation in security, police affairs, and crime prevention.

The ministry will consider early signing a memorandum of understanding with the National Security Council of India to share information and deal with other issues relating to the interest and security of each country.
