Hung Yen is Vietnam's 14th province hit by bird flu, the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced on June 1.

According to the Hung Yen provincial Veterinary Agency, results of blood sample tests of dead ducks at a farm in Dinh Cao commune, Phu Cu district showed that these ducks were infected with virus H5N1. All 300 young ducks had not been vaccinated against bird flu. The department in coordination with local administrations culled all the ducks and disinfected surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, 120 out of 200 unvaccinated ducks were found dead at a farm in Thanh Lac commune, Nho Quan district in northern Ninh Binh province on May 30. The dead ducks tested positive for the lethal virus H5N1.

Since early May, bird flu has recurred in 14 provinces and cities, namely Nghe An, Nam Dinh, Son La, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Dong Thap, Can Tho, Ninh Binh, Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc, Ha Nam, Quang Nam and Hung Yen.

Localities are making great efforts to prevent the spread of bird flu and to stamp out the disease. Total 63 provinces and cities have carried out the first phase of the vaccination campaign on 126.25 million poultry, including 76 million chickens.
