The Royal Flora Ratchaphuruek 2011 as tribute to the Royal perseverance
Thailand is celebrating the 84th birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej throughout this year.
In 2012, the country will celebrate another two auspicious occasions. One is the 80th birthday anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, and the other is the 60th birthday anniversary of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.
As part of the celebrations for these three historic occasions, the Thai government is preparing to hold an International Horticultural Exposition, also known as the “Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2011,” as a tribute to the royal perseverance.
Organized jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Department of Agriculture, the Highland Research and Development Institute (Public Organization), and the Horticultural Science Society of Thailand, the event will be held for 99 days, from 16 December 2011 to 14 March 2012, at the Royal Park Ratchaphruek. The site covers an area of 470 rai, or 80 hectares, in Mae Hia subdistrict, Mueang district, Chiang Mai province.
The theme of the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2011 is “Greenitude: Reducing Global Warming to Save Planet Earth and to Improve the Quality of Life.” It comes from the concept of 3 Gs, which include generation, garden, and greenitude, and 3 Rs, which include reuse, reduce, and recycle. The concept is meant to educate children and youth in the values of trees and instill in them the sense of responsibility toward the green and healthy environment, so that they love and care for nature. It is also intended to call for concerted efforts in tackling the problem of global warming through reducing exploitation of energy resources by reusing and recycling.
Major activities include an exhibition of the outdoor international gardens, an exhibition of the indoor international gardens, international and national art and cultural performances, international and national competitions, international symposia, the National Horticultural Conference, and a bazaar of agricultural products.
The Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2011 is expected to attract two million domestic and international visitors during the 99-day period, or 20,000 visitors a day. At least 30 countries are likely to join the exposition. Many countries, such as Sudan, Kenya, Nepal, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Turkey, Bhutan, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan, Armenia, and Pakistan have already accepted to participate in this event.
In other news, the Thai garden, designed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives in cooperation with the Horticultural Society of Thailand, won the second place, or the Special Honor Award, at the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition. This exposition was held in Taipei from November 2010 to April 2011. The Thai garden was also voted the third most popular display at this exposition.
