US remains Vietnam’s top seafood export market

The US remained Vietnam’s top seafood market in January although it has raised a number of trade barriers against the country’s exports, according to the General Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Of total Vietnamese seafood export earnings worth US$376 million showing a year-on-year increase of 3.5 percent, the US accounted for 19.15 percent, followed by Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) 17.81 percent and 8.36 percent respectively.

As there will be a shortage of capital and labour in 2013, the ministry has urged the seafood sector to further invest in raw materials and renovate technologies while increasing supervision on product quality and trade promotion.

The sector is expected to earn US$6.4 billion this year if the global demand is increasing.
