The event attracted the participation of ASEAN member countries, experts and scholars from Japan, the Republic of Korea, China, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, and Australia. Representatives from the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute also attended the conference.

During the two-day event, the conference heard Japanese expert, Dr Akrra Omoto from the Japan Atomic Energy Agency talk about the recent explosion incident of Fukushima nuclear power plant No 1. He discussed the incident impact on the environment, the valuable lessons which could be learnt from the disaster as well as the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in developing nuclear energy safety.

The conference also discussed projects on developing nuclear energy in Asia, ways to develop infrastructure for nuclear power plants and how to train human resources for these plants as well as issues of mutual concern.

Delegates agreed that the Fukushima incident has made a certain impact on the nuclear development programme of many nations and is a constant reminder for nations to ensure the safety of nuclear power plants.

However, they also said that developing civil nuclear energy is an irreversible trend which can meet the increasing demand of the economies in the world.
