Vietnam seeks closer legislative ties with Spain

(VOV) - The Vietnam National Assembly wants to increase cooperation and share experience in legislation and visit exchanges with the Spanish parliament, NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung has said.

Vietnam also expects stronger cooperation in economic and education development with Spain, he told Juan Jose Lucas Gimenez, Vice President of the Senate of Spain at a meeting in Hanoi on January 14.

Hung noted Vietnam-Spain relations are developing well, and he believed the Vice President’s visit will contribute to promoting the strategic partnership in the interest of the two peoples.

He invited the Spanish parliament leaders to attend the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in Hanoi in early 2015.

Talks were held in Hanoi on January 14 between Vietnam National Assembly and Spain Senate delegations

For his part, Juan Jose Lucas Gimenez assured Hung his visit is not only to consolidate the fine relationship between the two legislative bodies, but also to explore ways of fully tapping the cooperation potential between the two countries.

He spoke highly of Vietnam’s steady growth despite the global economic recession, and voiced his support for Vietnamese businesses to penetrate Spain and Europe at large.

He proposed Vietnam support Spain’s UN Security Council membership bid, and confirmed Spain will work closely with Vietnam at international forums.

Both host and guest agreed to realise the consultation mechanism and cooperate at the IPU meeting, the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP) and other international forums.

The same day, a Vietnam National Assembly delegation led by Vice Chairman Huynh Ngoc Son held talks with the Spanish Senate delegation.

Son expressed hope Spain will help accelerate free trade agreement negotiations between Vietnam and the European Union.

The business circles of the two countries need to meet more frequently to explore long-term investment and cooperation, especially in tourism and environmental protection, he said.
