US$8.1 million pegged for UN Initiatives implementation

(VOV) - Luxembourg has pledged US$8.1 million for the implementation of UN initiatives in Vietnam, covering three key areas within the joint-plan framework between Vietnam and the UN for  2012-2016.

An agreement to this effect was signed at the 7th meeting of the Vietnam-Luxembourg Partnership Committee on November 8.

The donation will be used for implementing projects under the “Delivering as One” UN initiatives in Vietnam.

The initiative incorporates a joint support programme which will receive US$3.8 million, including US$3 million for education and health care.

Around US$1.3 million will also be allocated to a project to improve women’s capacity to cope with climate change, which will be implemented by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.

A Children’s Friendship project carried out by the United Nations Children's Fund and Dien Bien province will receive US$2.485 million.

The remainder will be for an e-Regulations project implemented by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

Luxembourg said that the funds come from the Cooperative Programme between Vietnam and Luxembourg for the 2011-2015 period.

UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, Pratibha Mehta, affirmed that UN agencies will work closely with Vietnam’s partners to use the funds effectively.
