The fifth ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Youth (SOMY) and the fourth SOMY Plus Three (SOMY + 3) opened in Hanoi on October 25, drawing senior officials from ten ASEAN countries and its three partners including China, the Republic of Korea (RoK) and Japan.

Nguyen Hoang Hiep, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union said the meeting was part of a cooperation mechanism on youth issues among ASEAN and ASEAN + 3. It aims to review the results of youth activities in recent times and devise co-operative measures in the future.

The meeting will discuss some youth resolutions, review implementation of cooperation programmes in ASEAN and ASEAN + 3 and establish plans for the ASEAN and ASEAN + 3 Ministerial Meeting on Youth in Vietnam in 2011.

It will also consider issues relating to youth in the ASEAN social culture community, including in human resources development, poverty reduction, raising youth awareness on ASEAN, promoting youth participation and responsibility for building the ASEAN Community.

Some plans and programme, such as the ASEAN Youth Leadership Development Programme will also be reviewed, awards will be presented to 10 youth organizations in ASEAN and a plan will be made for ASEAN Programme Fund.

The meeting will close on October 27.
