“Don’t Burn” by director Dang Nhat Minh has beaten out 24 arch-rivals to bag the Fukuoka Audience Award, the only prize at the on-going Fukuoka International Film Festival in Japan.

The movie, translated into Japanese as “Yesterday I dreamt peace”, has won the hearts of Japanese audiences, with theatres being packed every time it was screened.

Throughout each showing, viewers, and even members of the organising board, burst into tears at scenes reflecting the profound humanity of the film’s modest and courageous heroine, Dang Thuy Tram, played by Minh Huong.

“Don’t Burn” joined “Legend Is Alive” to make up a two-entry package from Vietnam to the 10-day festival.

The ten-day festival opened in the northern Japanese city of Fukuoka on September 18 with the participation of 16 countries and territories from Asia.

In the previous Fukuoka festival in 2007, “The White Silk Dress” by Director Luu Huynh entered the top ten list.

All the entries to the Fukuoka festival will be archived at the Fukuoka Library, which is capable of preserving films for up to 400 years.

Currently, some 30 Vietnamese films are kept at the library, including “Living in fear” by Director Bui Thac Chuyen and “Pao’s Story” by Director Ngo Quang Hai.
