The 8th ASEAN-India Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) opened in Vientiane, Laos, on April 28, with the participation of representatives from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

A Vietnamese delegation led by Nguyen Trung Thanh, Assistant to the Foreign Minister, attended the event.


During the two-day meeting, delegates will discuss regional and international issues; the implementation of agreements reached at the fourth ASEAN-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, late last year; and the projects within the framework of the ASEAN-India Action Programme; co-operation within the framework of the ASEAN Regional Forum; co-operation in the fight against terrorism and trans-national crimes; and issues relating to negotiations of building ASEAN-India free trade area.


The delegates will also deal with ASEAN's proposal to ask India to contribute US$1 million to the ASEAN Development Fund for the implementation of the Vientiane Action Programme and additional US$5 million to the ASEAN-India Cooperation Fund for the implementation of six mega programmes initiated by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan
