IPU132 carries diplomatic and political significance

(VOV) -  The 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU 132) is an important milestone in the history of Vietnam's diplomacy since the country became an official member of the IPU more than 35 years ago, said National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung at a media briefing in Hanoi on March 26.

The 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU 132) and related meetings scheduled to take place in Hanoi from March to April 1 is expected to draw more than 160 delegations including IPU Member Parliaments, associate members, international organizations and guests.

In his speech at the press briefing on the event, Hung said, “It is a political event of great historical and diplomatic significance, demonstrating enormous efforts of the National Assembly of Vietnam in international integration, and being a responsible member of the international community. The hosting of IPU-132 Assembly meetings also is an opportunity for the people and the National Assembly of Vietnam to express our friendship, solidarity and cooperation with parliamentarians and people from all continents of the world,”.

Themed “Sustainable Development Goals: Turning words into action”, the 132nd IPU Assembly aims to create a chance to assess the outcomes of the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to propose the Sustainable Development Goals for the post-2015 period.

It is also a good venue to discuss the issues of the role of Parliaments in the fields of cyber security, water management, international laws, national sovereignty, human rights, gender equality, human rights of MPs, health care of mothers and children, and HIV/AIDS.

IPU 132 will adopt draft resolutions at the Standing Committee on Peace and International security, the Standing Committee for Sustainable Development, Finance and Trade, the Standing Committee for Democracy and Human rights and the Standing Committee for UN Affairs.  The MPs will discuss and may pass a resolution on an emergency issue.

Meeting of Women Parliamentarian is expected to be attended by over 200 women delegates and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Meeting. On this occasion, the National Assembly of Viet Nam will hold a commemorative event and show their continued commitments to active and responsible participation in the activities of the Meeting.

While the Assembly Meeting is going on, the Association of Secretaries Generals of Parliaments (ASGP) will meet and discuss the following topics: (1) "Searching for an effective model of a supporting agency" proposed by Office of the National Assembly of Viet Nam and (2) "Lobbying and interest groups: another aspect of the legislative process" proposed by the Philippines, in order to exchange experiences and practices in providing supporting services to the parliaments and ensuring the implementation of IPU’s resolutions at Member Parliaments.

In the framework of IPU 132, the Forum of Young Parliamentarians of IPU will also be held to express young people’s views on two draft resolutions on cyber warfare and shaping new mechanisms for water governance.
