Chairman of the Vietnam National Assembly Nguyen Phu Trong has called for closer co-operative ties between the Vietnamese and UK parliaments, particularly in legislative and judicial areas.

While meeting with the UK Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice Jack Straw in Hanoi on September 12, Chairman Trong said as Vietnam’s legislative body is reforming its organisation and operation to improve its role in the country’s life, the sharing of experiences with the UK, which has a long parliamentary tradition, would be very useful.

The legislative leader spoke highly of Jack Straw’s visit as a demonstration of growing Vietnam-UK relations.

As Vietnam and the UK are celebrating the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the official visits by Jack Straw and Prince Andrew, would help boost co-operative ties between the two countries and parliaments in the future, Chairman Trong added.

Straw said the UK is willing to share with Vietnam its experience in parliament, state and government activities, including the modernization of the parliament’s working style and the appraisal of draft laws.
