State President offers incense in tribute to Hung Kings

VOV.VN - Millions of Vietnamese from all parts of the country converged in the northern province of Phu Tho today (Apr. 6) for the 2017 Hung Kings Festival honouring the eighteen original kings of Vietnam.

Each year, on the 10th day of the third lunar month, the Lac Viet ethnic group holds a festival to celebrate and pay tribute to the 18 Hung Kings and pray for the future prosperity of the country.

This morning, State President Tran Dai Quang leads senior party and government officials together with millions of pilgrims to the Hung Upper Temple for a ritual paying homage to the founders of the nation.

Today is set aside for all Vietnamese generations to show their profound gratitude towards the ancestors who started and built this great country, says the State President.

The ceremony, solemn and sacred, is held at the Den Thuong (Upper) Temple on Nghia Linh Mountain, which has been used for worshipping gods since the days of the Hung Dynasty.

The ceremony begins at Phu Tho Conference Centre, then moves to the Hung Temple festival centre and then to upper temple.

The participants lay wreaths of flowers in front of the carved stele that marks the exact spot where President Ho Chi Minh once delivers a famous speech praising the Hung Kings.

All delegates and participants wear festive costumes as they carry the national and festival flags, and display a wreath that reads ‘Vietnamese people remember the merits of Hung Kings.’

Eight young girls in traditional long dresses carry incense, flowers, and offerings, and the procession is accompanied by musicians playing ceremonial music.

One row of pilgrims is comprised of 100 young men wearing traditional costume reflecting the legendary 100 sons of the Vietnamese people.

Other traditional rituals include a palanquin procession staged by over 300 people, a dragon dance, a drum performance, a water puppet show and a folk music performance.
