The Japanese Business Association in HCM City donated VND720 million (US$45,000) to the HCM City Association for Sponsoring Poor Patients on March 26.

The money was presented to three hospitals in the city, which provide free surgery and treatment for poor patients.

The Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital received VND300 million, the Maxillofacial Hospital VND270 million, and the Hospital for Children VND150 million.

Yasushi Ishida, Chairperson of the Japanese association, said donations from its 360 members rose from US$25,000 in 1996 to US$38,000 last year and US$45,000 in 2007.

Le Thanh Hai, Deputy Chairman of the city association for the poor, said total donations from the Japanese group in the past 10 years amounted to more than US$260,000.

The donations helped more than 5,000 poor children and young adults receive free surgery and treatment.
