Scientists have recently proposed that the Central Highlands provinces take drastic measures to preserve rare species of birds.

The proposal was made after the Ecology, Natural Resources and Environment Institute under the National Centre for Natural Science and Technology conducted research into rare species of birds in the districts of Ea Sup, Buon Don and Ea H'leo in Dac Lac province.

The research, carried out in collaboration with the Science and Technology Department of Dac Lac province, showed that the Central Highlands offers a favourable environment for peafowl and other rare species of birds.

The research also found that various national parks, sanctuaries and forests for special purposes have been set up in the Central Highlands to provide habitats for rare species of birds and that numerous measures have been taken by the region to ensure biological diversity, and protect sources of gene and precious species of birds, including peafowl, starred pheasants, pheasants and peacock pheasants.

The research, however, indicated that the dwindling forest acreage, the destruction of wildlife habitats and illegal hunting of wildlife have remarkably reduced the number and the size of  herds of peafowl, pheasants and starred pheasants, especially in the Ea So sanctuary.
