A rare pheasant discovered by a railway worker recently is a Lophura edwarsi, classified as an endangered species, confirmed world renowned ornithologist Vo Quy.

The pheasant has a greyish-brown coat with a short, shaggy white crest, red legs and face was found in the central province of Thua Thien Hue. It is 52cm long with a wingspan of 31cm and 14cm long legs.

Lophura edwarsi is a bird of the pheasant family that is endemic to the rain forest in the central provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue.

It was first discovered 70 years ago in Bach Ma Mountain by a French citizen.

The Deputy Director of the provincial Department for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hoang Ngoc Khanh, said his office has contacted the Hanoi National Zoo to find a solution for conserving and multiplying this rare bird.
