The Australian Embassy in Hanoi has announced a package of AU$97,000 (US$92,000) for small-scale development projects to assist underprivileged communities from the central province of Thua Thien-Hue northwards.

The total capital will be channeled in a year from next month through the Direct Aid Programme (DAP), whose priority areas include health, education and environment.

The Embassy said non-profit DAP funding is available to individuals, community groups and NGOs engaged in development activities in Vietnam.

In the 2007-2008 fiscal year, DAP funded small-scale development projects in Hanoi and the provinces of Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Ha Tay, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue.

In addition to DAP funding, Australia will provide an estimated AU$104 million in official development assistance (ODA) to Vietnam in the 2008-2009 fiscal year.
