The central coastal province of Quang Nam on February 7 celebrated its 15th anniversary with State President Truong Tan Sang and Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in attendance.

Since being split from the former Quang Nam – Danang province in 1997, Quang Nam has ironed out snags to reap great initial achievements by shifting its economic structure towards developing industry and services. Industrial production has increased 15 times and budget revenues have risen 27 times. Per capital income has also seen a tenfold increase while the number of poor households has decreased annually by 2.5-3 percent. Security, social order and welfare have also been well maintained.

Despite its positive development, Quang Nam remains a poor province with poverty rate higher than the national average.

Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Phuoc Thanh said Quang Nam will uphold its historical, cultural, and revolutionary traditions, promote integration and expand international cooperation to mobilize all available resources for socio-economic development.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Sang highlighted the traditions and achievements of the local Party and people during the past resistance war, and especially since it was reestablished 15 years ago.

However, he said, Quang Nam is still poor, so it needs to make greater efforts to fully tap its potential.

Quang Nam should continue shifting its economic structure and renovate its growth model by developing both industry and services, and cooperating with other central provinces, said Mr Sang.

The State leader asked the central province to pay due attention to Party building, poverty reduction and improvements in the quality of education and culture.

He said he believes Quang Nam will achieve industrialization and modernization by 2020.

On the occasion, President Sang presented Quang Nam province with the Ho Chi Minh Order.
