The Vietnam War Veterans Association and war veterans of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PVN) held a mass at National Cemetery Road No9 in Quang Tri province on July 25 to honour fallen combatants.

The requiem was attended by association president Lieu. Gen. Tran Hanh, PVN CEO Dinh La Thang, Quang Tri authorities, 300 PVN war veterans, and monks of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.

PVN war veterans presented gifts to seriously wounded invalids, lone elderly people, and orphans being cared for at the provincial social support centre for seriously wounded invalids and needy children. They also handed over VND50 million in cash to help refurbish cemetery Road No9.

They also presented 50 savings books worth VND3 million each to Quang Tri’s former volunteer soldiers, a charity house in Trieu Trung commune, Trieu Phong district, and a sum of money to upgrade a local war martyrs cemetery in Hai Phu commune, Hai Lang district.

The same day, a Radio the Voice of Vietnam delegation led by general director Vu Van Hien paid floral tribute to fallen combatants at Truong Son National Cemetery in Quang Tri province.

The cemetery is the final resting place of more than 10,000 soldiers who laid down their lives during the past wars for national independence and freedom. So far this year the cemetery has invested over VND2 billion in refurbishing its facilities.

Vietnam has annually observed July 27 as War Invalids and Martyrs Day since 1947.
