The Vietnam-US Friendship Association (VUFA) is calling on American people to support Vietnam in its pursuit of what the US terms as Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status.

In a recent letter, the association said that the American administration's approval of PNTR for Vietnam is the last piece necessary for both countries to complete the normalisation process of bilateral relations. It said that Vietnam is taking the necessary steps towards a long-lasting relationship with the US based on mutual understanding.

In the course of a series of activities to boost Vietnam-US relations over the recent past, notably the official US visit by Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai last year, VUFA expressed its belief that bilateral relationship will continue to gain momentum. The letter cited important events in 2006, including U.S President George W. Bush's upcoming visit to Vietnam, slated for November 2006.
