In the first five months of the year, US$709 million of official development assistance (ODA) capital has been disbursed, the Ministry of Planning and Investment reported.

The total amount included US$625 million in loans and US$84 million in non-refundable aid.

The three main sponsors of ODA - the World Bank (WB), Asia Development Bank (ADB) and Japan - hit US$493 million, accounting for 79 percent of total disbursement.

By May 10, capitalization of ODA agreements that Vietnam signed with sponsors reached US$1.216 billion, including US$1.195 billion in loans and US$21 million in non-refundable aid. Most notable was a US$40.8-million project to upgrade the Yen Vien-Lao Cai railway funded by ADB.

The MPI also reported that in the first five months of the year, Vietnam’s economy continued to pick up with GDP achieving 7.88 percent, higher than the same period last year. In particular, the securities market continued to experience robust development, with its total capitalization accounting for 25-30 percent of GDP in 2007.
