First gay parade held in Vietnam

Vietnam Pride 2012, the first-ever festival for gays and lesbians to be held in the country, conducted a bicycle parade on August 5 to promote the message “For a World without Sex Discrimination.”

Nguyen Thanh Tam, Vietnam Pride 2012 programme coordinator, said although this is the first time such a festival has been held in Vietnam, it has received a positive response from the participants and the broader community.

Over the past two days, hundreds of people from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community have joined Viet Pride programmes at the Goethe Institution in Hanoi, Tam said.

Huynh Minh Thao, a media representative from the Linkage and Information Group which holds meetings for gay and lesbian people in Vietnam, said the festival aims to give people an insight into Vietnamese homosexual people to protect their interests.
